Walton Yan

Walton Yan (he/his) studies ancient Greek art from the Hellenistic to the Eastern Roman period. At this moment, he is especially interested in longue durée questions pertaining to the medium of Greek relief (votive, funerary, documentary, etc.) and its relevance to the medium of painting (especially in the later Byzantine period). His other research interests are art historiography, the style-concept, Greek epigrams, comparative art history, and the palimpsest.

Originally trained in Germanic Studies and Philosophy, Walton turned to Byzantine art history (and later Graeco-Roman art history) in the course of his studies at the University of Chicago, from which he will graduate with majors in the humanities in the summer of 2025. He still very much hopes to pursue his interests in modern literary and philosophical literatures in his doctoral work. In the fall of 2024, he was a visiting student in art history at Universität Basel in Switzerland.
