Marisa Bass wins Guggenheim Fellowship

April 12, 2021

Professor Bass has been awarded the 2021 inaugural Guggenheim Fellowship in Early Modern Studies in recognition of her current book project The Monument’s End: Public Art and the Modern Republic. Her book explores the prehistory of current controversies surrounding monuments in the democratic public sphere. In it, she asks whether the making of monuments is ever compatible with the making of a modern republic. By tracing the tension between individual commemoration and the collective aspiration toward liberty from the Dutch Republic to the present, The Monument’s End demonstrates that the problem of reconciling reactionary forms with progressive ideologies is not only contemporary; it is also centuries old.
