Exhibition, curated by Postdoctoral Fellow Ivana Dizdar, wins award
In 2024 Ivana Dizdar, Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Art, curated the exhibition The Clichettes: Lips, Wigs, and Politics, at the McMaster Museum of Art (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario), which was just named ‘Exhibition of the Year’ (GOG Awards).
The exhibition traced the long-time collaboration of Canadian performance artists Louise Garfield, Janice Hladki, and Johanna Householder—known as the Clichettes (c. 1978-1993)—whose work bridged theatre, lip-sync, dance, costume, and comedy. It was accompanied by a full-length catalogue, edited by Ivana and featuring contributions by leading art, film, and fashion scholars Marni Jackson, John Greyson, Alexandra Schwartz, Mark Kingwell, rl Goldberg, Lillian Allen, and Wanda Nanibush.
“This first-ever retrospective of the groundbreaking Canadian feminist performance trio succeeded as serious art historical scholarship, immersive visitor experience, and accessible cultural celebration… a stunning visual spectacle that honoured [the Clichettes’] radical feminist vision.”
