Alex Fialho co-curates Michael Richards: Are You Down? at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami

April 27, 2021

Second year Ph.D. student Alex Fialho co-curated Michael Richards: Are You Down? at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. The exhibition, which he conceived with co-curator Melissa Levin and in collaboration with Michael Richards’ estate, is the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work. Richards was integral to a generation of Black artists emerging in the 1990s, whose artworks confront the realities of racial injustice, and amplify the complexity of Black identity. At the age of 38, the artist tragically passed away on September 11, 2001 while working in his studio in World Trade Center, Tower One. The exhibition marks a homecoming for the artist’s work, since the largest solo exhibition of Richards’ lifetime took place at a gallery located across the street from where the museum stands today. On view through October 2021, the retrospective marks the 20th anniversary of September 11 with the largest ever exhibition of Richards’ work.
