18th & 19th Century Colloquium: Freyja Hartzell Book Talk

Dr. Hartzell teaches the history of modern design, architecture, and art at Bard Graduate Center in New York City. She received her PhD from Yale University in the History of Art in 2012. A specialist in the history of German design, her research revolves around the nature of utilitarian designed objects and their role in the construction and inflection of subject-object relations. Her first book, Richard Riemerschmid’s Extraordinary Living Things, appeared with MIT Press this fall. She is currently working on a new book, Doll Parts: Designing Likeness, and a related exhibition on dolls and human likeness, to open at BGC in the spring of 2025.
