Tara Contractor works on nineteenth-century European art, with a focus on British painting. Her dissertation, “British Gilt: Gold in painting 1790-1914,” investigates gold as a defining material of the nineteenth century; a material through which artists explored the economics of empire, and their place within new, global art histories. She holds an MA in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute, and wrote her MA thesis on Arts and Crafts garden design.
