Modern and Contemporary Art

Nicole Demby’s academic focus is on global histories of modernism, the history of decolonization, and art’s role in twentieth-century internationalism.  Her dissertation will examine how UNESCO and state and non-state actors espousing different forms of Pan-Africanism and Pan-Asianism used art to articulate different universal and transnational imaginaries in the international institutional public sphere in the late 40s and 1950s.  She received her B.A. from Stanford in the Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities program, has written for numerous magazines and exhibition catalogues, and has worked with the Arts & Labor group in New York.
