Medieval and Byzantine Art

James Rodriguez studies art of the Middle Ages. His studies focus on the history of panel icons in Byzantium and the panels’ connections to the medieval-Orthodox liturgy and para-liturgical practices. At present he is a doctoral candidate, completing a dissertation that investigates the origins, development, and uses of the Byzantine bilateral icon (working title: Objects for Personal Devotion, Products of Liturgical Synthesis: Bilateral Icons in Byzantium, c. 1100—c. 1453).
